Psalm for Moving Day

Serve the Lord with horseradish
and eat like those who are on standby.

Serve the tenant with a subpoena
and drive him from the house
with flaming headaches.

For great is the tilt of the lintel
and the slant of the door.

Stove and fridge vibrate the Landlord;
heat and dissolve Him forever.

He will raise up a new house
on the third day. Or fourth.

Let the homeless call out on Wednesdays
with a loud Voice.

Let the new house open its mouth and say Ah.

Let the old fairies wait with their blessings
until it is almost too late.

Let the rent go to the Landlord
on the first without fail;

Let the envelope have a window
so the checks may see out.

Let the night have a door
so the cars may have privacy.

Let the stainless not lie with the silver,
and let them have separate mouths.

Rejoice with the Actuary
who turns the gas on and off at will.

Praise the exposed brick
rising like a wall.

Come forth with a cell phone,
that I may move and shake at the same time.

Come forth with a broom and cleanse the new house
of cat piss and hypodermic needles.

Come forth with rented emeralds
that I may go among cafe society.

And let there be a bridegroom,
and let him have a car,
and let him come from New Jersey.

And let light find its way
through the windows by day,
and the sweet air all night,
but no manner of unidentified youths,
for the length of this lease, amen.
